Breakthroughs Had Been Made in New Project

      “Key technologies for industrialization of UHMWPE fiber prepregs as well as design, production and application for ballistic composite materials”

On June 28th, 2024, China National Textile And Apparel Council organized a project appraisal meeting on “Key technologies for industrialization of UHMWPE fiber prepregs as well as design, production and application for ballistic  composite materials” jointly undertaken by Beijing Protech New Material Science Co., Ltd. and Jiangnan University in Beijing.

The appraisal committee consisted of seven experts including Sun Yize (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering / Professor of Donghua University) serving as the Director of the Appraisal Committee, Ma Yongmei (General Manager of China Textile Academy -CTA / Senior Engineer) serving as the deputy director of the appraisal committee, Wu Hui (National Distinguished Young Scholars / Professor of Tsinghua University), Lei Hongshuai (National Excellent Young Scholars / Professor of Beijing Institute of Technology ), Zhou Wei (Professor of Hebei University). Zheng Zhicai (Research Fellow of No.53 Research Institute of Norinco Group) and Wang Xuguang (Chairman of Beijing BW Advanced Materials / Senior Engineer).

Dr. Johnny Zhou of Beijing Protech New Material Science Co., Ltd. and Professor Zhang Diantang of Jiangnan University made a work report and a technical report of the project respectively in the meeting. The experts listened to the report, reviewed the appraisal documents, visited the production site and inspected the products. After questioning and discussion, the appraisal committee considered that the project discovered the ballistic response mechanism of UHMWPE fiber prepregs and composite materials, developed UHMWPE fiber interface treatment technologies, special spreading technology and automatic cross laminating technology, broke through the crucial manufacturing technology of low areal density UHMWPE prepregs and realized the scale production of 1.6 m wide ballistic  prepregs. The ballistic performance of the composite material was more than 16% higher comparing with the current international mainstream ballistic composite materials. Compared with the common brick wall, the weight of the wall which made from UHMWPE composite materials was reduced by 30% while the compressive strength increased by 30%. The composite materials could be large-scale produced. And they had been widely used in the field of armor protection and body protection in domestic and abroad markets. The social and economic benefits were significant and the overall performance had reached the international advanced level. The appraisal committee unanimously agreed that the project was approved.
